Reflect – a ray of hope art installation and documentary

When Donald Trump was elected President of the United States using an election promise to build a new and heavy fortified wall along the USA / Mexico border, CompanyX director David Martin and artist Duncan McKellar had an idea.
An idea that would take them all the way to the border towns of Douglas, Arizona and Agua Prieta, Sonora, Mexico in January 2018 to stage an art event unlike any other, using the power of something we all share; wherever we live in the world – the sun. Reflect featured 50 Americans and 50 Mexicans standing together, as one, in a perfectly straight line stretching for one kilometer. Participants wore mirrored masks that in the desert sun flashed a pathway of light across the wall. Two countries, a stunning moment of togetherness and a defiant challenge to those whose aim instead is to divide us, wherever we live, at one of the most iconic and politically toxic dividing lines of them all.
David designed the Reflect logo that appeared on each mask using the mathematics symbol for division, rotated to form two eyes and nose. The line in the middle also symbolised the border wall, the dot either side a line participant and a reflection of one another. To finish the project they flew to Washington DC exactly one year after Trump’s inauguration and asked people to write a ‘Postcard to the President’. Before flying back to the UK they posted 175 to the White House. The result was a 30 minute documentary that followed them as they tried to bring the idea to life under the ever watchful eye of US Border Patrol. CompanyX edited the film and trailer (see below) with Adobe Premiere Pro and After Effects.

Brooke Theory of Change

Equine charity Brooke initially asked us to create a Theory of Change (ToC) diagram that demonstrated “the complex interaction between the equine, the equine owning communities, and the system within which they co-exist”. We then put together a simple animation showing how the layers ToC interconnect.

Wittenberg Amsterdam

Wittenberg is a stylish new apartment complex situated in the heart of historic Amsterdam. We were asked to design a look for the printed collateral in time for their November 2017 launch. This included the Wittenberg entry card and wallet, a journal for guests to scribble down their latest genius idea, an appliances instruction guide, door hangers and stationery.
Architecturally, one of distinctive features of the Wittenberg building is it’s facade and the uniform arrangement of its windows. An apartment typically includes a minimum of three windows and we used this as the basis for a simple ‘three window’ graphic device used across the printed set. It aims to visually acknowledge a part of the Wittenberg experience that uniquely belongs to the guest and support its proposition of ‘where Amsterdam feels like home’.

Multi-agency brick kiln report

Working in partnership with Brooke, The Donkey Sanctuary and International Labour Organization, we have just finished a 64 page report on the Brick Kiln industry in South Asia ready for a launch event in Kathmandu, Nepal.
We decided to use bricks as a versatile graphic device that can be used in infographics, page footers or to construct a larger shape; such as the brick kiln chimney shape on the front cover. The colours of the report aim to reflect those typically seen in and around brick kilns.

Locke aparthotel collateral

New aparthotel brand Locke asked CompanyX to design a series of printed collateral ready for the launch of their first development in east London. The brand style of Locke is simple, contemporary and ‘authentic retro’ (i.e. a bit hipster) so to reflect that we designed the range using brown craft paper and card, with simple monochrome printing throughout.
To date, the deliverables so far are door hangers, entry card wallet, appliances instruction piece and recipe book bookmark.
